South Africans rejoice as Black Friday 2026 makes way for Black November, with many retailers extending their bargains to the end of the month. For some this means a frenzy-fuelled shopping spree, but for most it means planning, hunting and lots of math because South Africans have learned through tough times to be one step ahead. We have a few ways you can make the most of it this year:

Start before sales do

A smart shopper is well informed: know the rhythm of the season. BDO’s Palesa Ngomeza describes shoppers treating the season as an extended period of planning and research rather than a one-day spree, and Nedbank said its 2025 data pointed to people being more purposeful and patient, waiting for exactly the deals they want. Absa said its 2025 Black Friday data reflected “a more cautious yet informed consumer”, with people spreading their spending across the month and looking for real value. In other words, savvy shopping is now the norm, and if you like to take your time, you’re in very good company.

Remember, the best deal is the one you planned for. It is important to ask yourself beforehand what a good deal looks like to you. What counts as a good discount? Because among the excitement, bright lights and flashy “on sale” signs you want to make sure you make the right choice and get the Better Price. Don’t forget to have your bsmart card ready to save even more at the till.

Let price history do the talking

The number on the tag might look good because it is only showing you part of the bigger picture. The full picture can be found in the price history. Consumer rights attorney Trudie Broekmann has noted that some suppliers raise prices in the weeks before Black Friday, so a “cut” can simply bring the product back to its normal price. It’s helpful to use a price comparison site like PriceCheck to find the real market price. Her advice from last year still stands: track the prices of the products you want in advance, so you already know the real market price when the sale starts.

Comparison will keep you sharp

Black Friday is exciting. Enjoy the experience as well as the purchases and take the time to browse. The same item can vary substantially between retailers, so take a few minutes to check two or three. Also remember that the shelves are strategically packed to sell. It also pays to read the return policy before you buy. A good deal is even better when you know you can send the item back if it isn’t right.

Go where you know

Stick to the retailers you trust. Remember that while you are making the most of specials and deals, the final decision is yours to make and it should be grounded in careful consideration for the stores and sites you visit. If a website you have never heard of is offering a discount on a premium product, pay attention. If the checkout does not seem secure or the contact number could be clearer, this needs to be considered.

Your takeaway

Be smart. Sale or no sale, use your bsmart card at the till to stack savings.
